2026 HAFS Festival

At our school’s 2026 festival, I stood on three stages. As student council president I opened the ceremony, and I took the stage again as the leader of Ha-capella and as the leader of THE C.I.T.Y. Within a single festival, I existed at once as a representative of the entire student body, as a leader guiding two teams, and as a creator building a stage of my own. Of all of it, the memory that will stay with me the longest is the process of preparing the opening ceremony.

Traditionally, the student council president simply hosts the opening ceremony. But I was someone who makes music, so instead of merely hosting, I was given the role of writing an original song that fit the festival’s intent and theme—a song that would honor our school and our festival and open its very first moment. This was actually an opportunity none of the previous presidents had ever been given. It was a stage our supervising teacher had specially arranged out of a desire to make the most of my passion for music. Looking back to how it began, it was a stage we built together after I chose, on my own, to cancel the solo performance I had originally planned in exchange for the teacher’s offer to let me sing in the opening act. The teacher helped with a great deal of it, but responding to that offer and actually producing the music—writing the lyrics, composing, and arranging it—was my part.

As student council president, I felt a sense of responsibility for the entire process of planning the festival. The opening ceremony in particular was something I had to keep reminding myself was not “my solo performance,” but a place to lift up the spirit of the festival on behalf of all the students, to celebrate this year’s theme, and to unite every member of HAFS as one. The teacher laid out a clear direction: cut the song down to under two minutes; instead of a vague message of hope, weave in keywords like “HAFS,” “화양연화 (the blossoming years),” and “in bloom,” along with the concrete meaning of our school life, our natural surroundings, our culture, and the festival itself; make it a melody-driven song that draws on sounds like the school anthem’s melody and the bell that rings between classes, rather than something hip-hop-heavy; and craft a strong bridge so that the song could flow directly into the principal’s part as it ended. I took these requests to heart and revised and refined the song again and again. Finally, I composed a theme song of our HAFS Festival, which contained the message of ‘The most beautiful moments in life'(it was the main topic of our 2026 HAFS Festival).

The real conflict flared up over the stage costume. The teacher judged that the safari-style school uniform carried meaning, citing the image of a student council president who represents the whole student body. I, on the other hand, as someone who had performed many times, believed that a costume is a crucial element—one that shapes the first impression of both the performer and the stage. So, to check whether my judgment was merely stubbornness, I asked my friends, Mr. Park Min-hyung, and several other teachers for their opinions, and all of them said this outfit was not excessive and was better than the safari uniform. To me, this was not stubbornness on my part alone, but a judgment built on gathered evidence. That said, in the process of pressing my opinion strongly, there was a moment when I spoke a little rudely, and the teacher was disappointed at that point.

Here, I tried to separate the emotion from the issue. First, I sincerely apologized for the part where my words had gone too far. I also told the teacher honestly how much I liked and relied on them. But on the core of my argument, I did not bend. It was not a matter of “doing whatever I wanted”; I carried my point forward on the grounds of my on-stage experience, the agreement of many people, the role I held on this stage, and the context of the promise that had set it all in motion. The teacher told me to “think about the reason you are standing in that place,” and said that if I truly respected them, I should show it through action rather than words. Those words made me realize that the seemingly trivial question of a safari uniform was in fact a much larger question: “Why are you standing on that stage?” Even so, I asked that—since I had revised, produced, and compromised on the song according to the teacher’s requests through the entire process—the final moment at least be left to my own choice. And in the end, I framed it this way: we were both heading toward the same goal of “a better stage, a more wonderful opening ceremony,” and this difference of opinion had come out of that very ambition, so rather than sulking, we should keep our original purpose in view and push forward together.

In the end, we reached a friendly compromise, and I got what I had hoped for. The Ha-capella rehearsal, too, went well after I practiced—following the teacher’s advice—to sharpen my diction and make the lyrics clearly audible, and the next day I successfully finished the opening ceremony stage. The festival as a whole came to a successful close. What stays with me most from this experience is that, even while going head-to-head with a teacher I respect, I did not damage the relationship: I bent flexibly on what could be bent, held firm with reason on what had to be kept, and brought it to a close at a point where both of us could win.

<lyrics>

웅크렸던 몸을 펴 yeah It’s time to bloom

We’re fine

We will bloom and shine this time

It’s time to Put the World into our Dream

Now we finally bloom

Much brighter

I’ll put my dream under the spotlight

I’ve gotta make it bloom and / It’s my highlight

Someday my soul will be on valhalla

The dark days are behind us

let’s bring our best

my friends, It’s time to bloom and shine

It’s time to Put the World into our Dream

Now we finally bloom

Much brighter

I’ll put my dream under the spotlight

I’ve gotta make it bloom and / It’s my highlight

Someday my soul will be on valhalla

The dark days are behind us

let’s bring our best my friends, It’s time to

bloom and shine

It’s time to Put the World into our Dream

Now we finally bloom

THE C.I.T.Y.

A LITTLE ENCOURAGEMENT, A LONG WAY.
